Everton owner is in talks with Marcelo Bielsa to become manager

Marcelo Bielsa is one of the candidates Everton chairman Farhad Moshiri has spoken to about succeeding Frank Lampard as manager.

Moshiri is said to be in favor of Bielsa’s appointment, but it is unclear whether the Argentine has the support of others in Everton’s hierarchy.

Lampard was sacked by Everton on Monday after leading the club to just one win in their last 14 games.

Everton’s 2-0 defeat at West Ham proved to be the last straw for Lampard, who had a winning record of just 27 per cent.

Bielsa has been out of work since February 2022. The 67-year-old was sacked by Leeds United as the Elland Road side were just two points above the relegation zone. Leeds then beat the drop under Jesse Marsch.

The former head coach of Athletic Bilbao previously steered Leeds to a ninth-place finish in their first season in the Premier League for 16 years.

He could inherit a team currently 19th in the Premier League with just three wins from their opening 20 games.

Lampard gone, but where will confused Everton go?

Everton will not play for two weeks due to elimination in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. They will receive Premier League leaders Arsenal on February 4.

Moshiri said Lampard’s future was “not his decision” after Everton lost 2-0 to fellow contenders West Ham last weekend.

Asked after the match if Lampard’s time was up, Moshiri – who supported Lampard in a talkSPORT interview earlier this month – told Sky Sports: “It’s not my call.”

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright admitted it was a “bad time” for the Goodison Park club, who are now without a win in 10 games in all competitions.

“It’s been a bad run of results for all of us, and for Frank, but no, I would never tell you that,” said Kenwright when asked the same question about Lampard’s position.

Asked if anything needed to change soon, he added: “We have to start winning, don’t we? It’s a bad time.”
